Unveiling the mysteries of the deep
Welcome to Giant Squid Research, where we are dedicated to exploring and understanding one of the ocean's most elusive creatures. Join us on a journey to uncover the secrets of the giant squid and contribute to vital marine biology research.
Our research initiatives
Giant Squid Research is at the forefront of marine biology, conducting critical studies to better understand these magnificent cephalopods. Our initiatives are designed to shed light on their habitat, behavior, and conservation needs.
Deep-sea expeditions
We organize and execute deep-sea expeditions using advanced submersible technology to observe giant squids in their natural, unexplored habitats. These missions are crucial for gathering firsthand data.
Genetic studies
Our team conducts genetic analysis to understand the population structure, evolutionary history, and genetic diversity of giant squids, contributing to their long-term conservation.
Behavioral observations
Through innovative camera deployments and passive acoustic monitoring, we strive to observe and document the elusive behaviors of giant squids in their deep-sea environment.
Habitat mapping
Habitat Mapping
We utilize advanced sonar and mapping technologies to identify and characterize the preferred habitats of giant squids, essential for protecting their critical environments.
We have analyzed data collected from Sperm Whales in order to determine where we have the best chances of locating a Giant Squid.
Tagging a Giant Squid
We plan on using a deep sea rover which is equipped with lighting and other attractants in hopes of getting close enough to tag a specimen.
State of the Art Equipment
We have obtained state of the art research equipment that is designed specifically for deep water research.
- Cameras
- Lighting
- Deep Sea Rovers
- Hydrographic Sonar & Imaging Equipment
- Hydrographic Research Vessel
- G.P.S & Mapping Equipment
- Underater Drones
- Tagging & Sampling Equipment
Sperm Whale Conservation
The Sperm Whale. poppulation is sill recovering. Scientists estimate that prior to whaling, the Sperm Whale population was well over 1.2 million worldiwide. Today they estimate between 250,000 - 300,000 remain. At their lowest, the number of living Sperm Whales was estimated to be less than 100,000.
The Sperm Whale plays a crucial role in the research of Giant Squid because they are the only animal known to primarily consume Giant Squid. The Sperm Whale has been a major contributor in the data that we do have on Giant Squid.
"The work done by Giant Squid Research is invaluable. Their dedication to exploring the unknown depths of our oceans inspires us all to support marine conservation."
Tanya Drewry, Lead Zoologist.
